Cenote The Pit + Dos Ojos

Playa del Carmen

From USD 229/person

Description

The Riviera Maya has the largest underground water system in the world.

Cenotes are systems of flooded caves formed by crystalline underground rivers typical of the region. In these fresh waters, you will find a great amount of biodiversity as well as stalactites, stalagmites, marine fossils, gas clouds (sulfuric acid) and haloclines (mix of salt water with fresh water), with a visibility of more than 50 meters.

Cenote The Pit has an upside down funnel shape and a depth of 90 meters, being one of the deepest in the region, you will stay at a maximum depth of 30 meters, from 12 to 18 meters where you can observe the Halocline (where fresh water meets salt water) and upon reaching 30 meters you will find a cloud of sulfur and hydrogen, where you will feel as if you were in the clouds, in Cenote The Pit fossils of more than 10 thousand years old have been found.

Cenote The Pit is a unique place, due to the way in which the light penetrates the cenote, reaching the cloud at a depth of 30 meters, illuminating the entire cavern and creating a play of lights in its interior and an unequaled sensation due to the immensity of this well of water.

Known by the Mayans as the gateway to Xibalba (the world of death), these two cenotes (The Pit and Dos Ojos) are located within the largest underground river system in the world with a length of 347 kilometers: Sac Actun - Dos Ojos System.

Cenote The Pit and Cenote Dos Ojos are one of the best dives to do in the Tulum and Playa del Carmen area.

We really enjoy this fantastic trip! Everyone was so nice and patient, and we saw the whale shark! So lovely and beautiful. If we had the chance must come to here again with Gluup! Thank you so much!

It was a magical and unforgettable experience. We saw the majestic whale shark; the guide even held our hands to help us stay calm and led us to where we could see it best! We felt incredibly safe with the captain and the guide, who were always very attentive and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed to eat and drink. The ceviche and guacamole were delicious. I highly recommend taking this tour with this company; you won't regret it!
