Gray Whale Watching in Puerto Chale

La Paz

From USD 160/person

Description

Puerto Chale, a small fishing port on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, is one of the best spots in Mexico for gray whale watching. This untouched sanctuary, still in the early stages of tourism development, offers a more private and authentic experience compared to other, more crowded observation points.

Every winter, hundreds of gray whales arrive in these waters after traveling between 15,000 and 20,000 kilometers from the Arctic. Their migration is one of the longest recorded in any mammal. These majestic creatures use the region’s warm and calm waters to breed and give birth to their calves.

The adventure begins with a van transfer from La Paz to Puerto Chale, a scenic drive that takes us to the Pacific coast. Once at the port, we will board a covered panga led by local captains, experienced fishermen who know these waters intimately. We will navigate towards Isla Margarita and Isla Creciente in Bahía Almejas, where whales gather in great numbers.

The boat tour lasts approximately two hours, giving us plenty of time to observe these ocean giants in their natural habitat. Often, the whales approach the boats, sometimes allowing visitors to touch them. This is a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter, where respect for their space is key to truly appreciating their beauty in their natural surroundings.

To make this experience even more enjoyable, meals and beverages are included in the tour, so you can relax and take in the moment.

A must-do experience for nature lovers.

Swimming with the whale sharks was worth every penny! No sunscreen so wear a swim shirt or rent a wetsuit. Our Captain Solomon was fabulous and our guide Nano was fun, energetic and did everything he could to make this a magical experience for everyone on board. We were the first pick up and last drop off which meant for a super long day but highly recommend!!

This was an amazing excursion. The Captain knew right where to drop you in so you can swim along the whale shark. If you hesitate, you ok be behind. The captain’s mate did a wonderful job of orienting you once you jumped in the water and he took amazing photos and video. I definitely recommend Gluup for this trip.
