Bull Sharks - Playa del Carmen

Today I want to talk to you about one of the most misunderstood beings on planet Earth: the bull shark. I will start by telling you a little about some generalities of the species, and why this topic? Because I want you to be encouraged to take part with Gluup, in a bull shark dive in Playa del Carmen.

The bull shark has a robust body and a snout that is shorter than it is wide. It can reach 3.5 meters in length and weigh 316 kg. It is a viviparous animal, that is to say that it gives birth to its fully developed live young. It feeds on sharks, rays, shrimp, crabs, bony fish, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, sea snakes, mammals, turtles, birds, among others.

It inhabits tropical and subtropical seas; in America it lives from southern California to Peru and from Boston to Uruguay, on the coasts of Africa, Australia and the Indian Ocean. It can also be seen off the coasts of China, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. It can be found on continental coasts, estuaries, muddy areas, lagoons and it is the only shark species that can penetrate long distances into rivers and live in them for a large part of their lives. They are coastal animals that do not exceed 150 meters in depth. depth.

Now I will tell you a little about its current reality, since 2020 it has been on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species, cataloged in a vulnerable state and with a global population that tends to decrease.

The main threats to this species are residential and industrial developments, climate change, fishing, and even pollution from poor agricultural practices.

This particular species has been biasedly defined by economic interests as dangerous to humans, but this statement could not be further from the truth. The truth is that it is a sociable species and the large number of people who have joined us for a bull shark dive in Playa del Carmen can attest to that. This activity is a sustainable way to help in the conservation of the species, of course, as long as it is done with responsible agencies.

If you are an ocean lover like us, you will undoubtedly want to know a little more about these beautiful and impressive animals, maybe get to know them up close? The protocols and security measures that our operators follow will keep you safe during this dive with bull sharks in Playa del Carmen that lasts about 45 minutes, and if you decide you can extend it with a second dive in one of the most beautiful reefs from Playa del Carmen.
